Entrepreneur and Senior Financial Advisor Bryan Sullivan Takes A New Approach to Both Investing and His Clients

Bryan Sullivan is the president and founder of Vellum Financial, an investment firm that is the embodiment of Sullivan’s uncompromising focus on the client.

20 years ago, Sullivan had no idea that one day he would manage over several hundred million dollars, help over 900 clients manage their money and start his own company. Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Sullivan always had an entrepreneurial spirit.

“When I needed money I would grab my Dad’s lawnmower and begin knocking on doors. Eventually I ended up hiring my friends to work for me,” reminisced Sullivan. From starting his own t-shirt business in elementary school to running a courier business in High School, Sullivan was not like most boys his age.

“As soon as I was legally allowed to get a work permit at age fourteen I was taking every job I could get to learn as many skills as I could,” said Sullivan.

At Oregon State University Sullivan happened to take a Stock Investing class at the same time he was dating a girl whose father was in finance. “It was during this time that I realized I was interested in investments, stock and how that had to do with the success of a business. I have always been entrepreneurial so the idea of studying business models was really appealing,” explained Sullivan.

In 1992, Sullivan interviewed at eight or ten companies right out of college and ended up accepting a position at the investment firm Edward Jones. The company was attractive to Sullivan because unlike most traditional firms who had brokers cold call potential clients, Edward Jones encouraged their advisors to knock on doors to drum up business. “I had a comfort level doing house cold calling because I had been doing it since I was a kid. I parked my car in a neighborhood and started generating relationships with potential clients,” said Sullivan.

In his first year Sullivan was the fastest starter for the firm and was promoted into a training system that sent him to St Louis, Missouri. There, Sullivan began training other brokers on how to become successful salesmen and build rapport with their clients.

“I taught hundreds of brokers how to give a compelling story to potential clients, build trust and then encourage them to make an investment,” explained Sullivan.

A few years later Sullivan moved to San Luis Obispo, California and took a job with Merrill Lynch. During his six years at Merrill Lynch, Sullivan got a glimpse of the inner workings of large, corporate financial firms, as he was able to see their reaction to the bursting of the real estate bubble and then the 2008 financial crisis.

“It was really eye opening to see how these Wall Street firms reacted to the financial crisis. There was such a lack of transparency, corruption and absolutely no focus on the clients. The upper levels of management only worried about protecting themselves, not their clients,” admitted Sullivan.

This time was also crucial for Sullivan as he was able to see the negative effects of, as Sullivan calls them, “Ivory tower executives.”

In 2009 Sullivan started Vellum Financial, a strictly objective financial advisory firm that incorporates completely transparent investment management practices while avoiding the negatives of the brokerage industry. “I wanted a place where I could shape my own culture and establish a higher standard of service and performance within the industry. I feel like it is my responsibility to help clients be true stewards of their own assets,” said Sullivan.

The name Vellum Financial, also represents many of the company’s and Sullivan’s core values. When trying to come up with a name for his company, Sullivan sat down with his wife, Tricia to think of a name that would represent the culture and set of values he wanted to bring to the table at his own firm. “Vellum is a type of paper with a transparent quality to it. It was what the Declaration of Independence was signed on. It is what money is printed on. It has great historical and symbolic value,” explained Sullivan.

Since starting in 2009, Vellum Financial has expanded to three offices with four advisors and an on staff Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP). The struggling economy has not affected Vellum Financial; in the past two years it has grown from managing zero to a couple of hundred million dollars.

Vellum Financial’s advisors help individuals and families achieve their financial planning goals, by providing advice on Investment Planning; Insurance Planning; Tax Planning; Retirement Planning; Estate Planning; Intergenerational Wealth Transfer Planning; and Educational Savings Planning. They also provide investment management services to retirees or those about to retire, and specialize in women who are recently divorced, widowed, or retired.

The Vellum Financial team has a unique approach to clients and investments. “We like to help clients make their money work as hard as they worked for it,” said Sullivan. During the ‘lost decade’ where the technology bubble and subsequent housing bubble caused very little growth and high volatility Sullivan discovered Vellum Financial’s secret sauce.

“We did well even during the hard times because I learned you cannot just buy and hold a stock and hope it will go up. Our advisors are much more proactive. We combine our core philosophy, which is conservative, with a technical quantitative approach,” said Sullivan. Their ‘secret sauce’ has helped the company mitigate downsides of a volatile market while still capturing the upside.

The staff at Vellum Financial also takes a long-term, team approach in the financial planning process, taking into account each client’s particular needs, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Sullivan is passionate that clients both maintain a rewarding lifestyle with peace of mind and financial freedom as well as helping clients manage financial matters and family issues.

Sullivan, husband and father of four children himself, places a high value on family. “I’m a huge fan of family. What makes my job so enjoyable is that I work with clients not just helping them make more money, but also funding their family life. I love helping clients plan for everything from weddings to graduations to birthdays,” said Sullivan.

His passion for family dynamics and personal ties is also shown by his extra-curricular activities. Sullivan has volunteered with the Morro Bay Lions Club and Big Brother Big Sisters organization. He supports his local college, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo by hiring interns coming out of school and speaking to graduating classes and business groups. Sullivan said, “I enjoy speaking and do it as much as I can.”

Vellum Financial also does regular financial education workshops for potential investors. In these classes they educate participants on everything from how to hire an advisor to social security to 401K management.

Sullivan believes that educating clients is crucial for giving them the all of the information they need to feel in control of their financial future. Vellum Financial also has a different financial structure than most traditional firms. “Traditionally you go to a broker and pay them a commission to buy a stock and then again to sell it. The problem with this model is that it encourages brokers to just buy and sell—even if that is not the best financial decision. We don’t do this. We only charge based on the value of a client’s account, so it is truly my incentive to grow the client’s assets,” explained Sullivan. This method aligns the client and the financial advisor’s interests.

Sullivan is also the author of the book, “Protecting Your Money From Yourself – A Retiree’s Guide to Insuring You Have Enough Money to Enjoy Your Retirement,” to help bring transparency to the investment process. He also writes articles on the Vellum Financial blog (www.VellumFinancial.com) to keep clients up to date on the latest news developments and how they might affect their investments.

Sullivan attributes his to success to his optimism. “I am a glass half full kind of guy. I wake up every morning in a great mood no matter what day of the week. I love my days because I do what I love. Even on those hard days with volatility or a bad market I know we have something very unique that we bring to the table,” said Sullivan.

In the future, Sullivan envisions growing his business to managing over a billion dollars. He also hopes to expand offices and add additional advisors. Most importantly, Sullivan wants to continue to provide high quality advice and integrate wealth management solutions that simplify and enhance the quality of his clients’ lives.
